I’ve been feeling down about living in Israel. With the wars, corruption, chaos, calamaties, death, destruction, destitution, and general disorder, it has been getting very difficult to find ways of ignoring the overall feeling of malaise. So, in the spirit of doing something positive to immunize myself against my feelings of depression, I have decided to post 1 thing every day about living in Israel that makes me smile. These probably won’t be massive discoveries or spiritual epiphanies. I’ve been living here too long for that. These will most likely be small things that just make me smile, or smirk, actually. Smiling seems to be something reserved for when my kids do… pretty much anything. Or when my wife walks into my office when I wasn’t expecting her. Those things merit smiles. These observations will certainly merit a smirk, and, perhaps, if we’re lucky, a grin. So, on to Day 1 of:

Israel Appreciation Observation

Today’s observation revolves around our water cooler. Yes, our water cooler. This water cooler, to be precise:

Mei Eden water cooler

Our water cooler sits in our kitchen, merrily waiting for when we need to fill our water glasses and never complains. It is a good water cooler. The company that provides water for our cooler (as well as leasing us the cooler itself) is called “Mei Eden” or “Water of/from Eden” if we’re going to get translitical. The Mei Eden people deliver water once a month. As part of their excellent service (no, this post isn’t about how excellent the water service is) they provide for their customers a calendar which shows the day that the next water delivery will be coming to your town.
“So what?” you say. “That is not so special. I get tons of calendars in the US. From my bank, from my grocery store, from my insurance agent, and, yes, even from my water guy!” AHA! I say. Verily! It may be so! However, does YOUR water cooler calendar not only display the Gregorian date but ALSO the HEBREW date! And lest you think that is all, the calendar doesn’t just have the Hebrew date of the Jewish calendar, this silly little fridge calendar even shows the PUBLIC FAST DAYS on it. BEHOLD!!!
mei eden calendar

The calendar displays even the “minor” fasts such as todays’ fast of the 17th of Tammuz! So put that in your Diaspora pipe and smoke it!

Actually, they really do show up when they say they will. They’re a pretty reliable company compared to the ridiculously bad companies that provide all the rest of our services. And both taps, hot and cold, have child locks on them. You have to squeeze the tap and then lift it. Also, we don’t use the hot water feature. It is never hot enough and it just wastes electricity.
