kosher conference of orthodox rabbis

A bunch of Rabbis meet to discuss scientific and other information pertinent to ruling on kashrut in this article. By itself an interesting, though not Earth-shattering event. However, it is the quote at the end of the article which made me take notice:

The rabbi [Rabbi Aharon Nesher, chairman of Maskil L’David] also said that he believed the increase of consumer power depended on the information consumers have.

“We want the public to know what Halachic kashrut is, not just to be satisfied with a kashrut stamp as a marketing hook. For example, consumers should know there is no need for kashrut on mineral water,” he concluded.

A learned rabbi who admits openly that there may be some people who take kashrut certification too far? Now that is something interesting.

I’ve often felt dismayed by the trend of the ultra-orthodox and even modern-orthodox to take things too far with regards to halachic stringencies. It is nice to see a new trend of intelligent and respected rabbanim who are beginning to buck this trend.
